GoodGym Barnet meet at the Phoenix Cinema at 6.45pm on Tuesdays to run around the local area doing good. It’s free to run with the group and everybody is welcomed. Runs are usually between 2-8km, depending on who they’re helping. Past tasks include helping local care homes organise DVDs and clearing their gardens; painting the RSPCA clinic and local children’s centre; litter picking and gardening; as well as a huge amount of other good.
GG Barnet launched in August 2016 and is lead by personal trainer Pennie Varvarides. It’s part of the wider GoodGym organisation, which runs groups in numerous boroughs.
Give and Take this New Year – free reuse events in north London
North London Waste Authority (NLWA), through its Wise Up To Waste campaign is offering residents of north London the opportunity to bring along unwanted items to a ‘Give and Take’ event near them, or pick up a treat, for free.“The Give and Take initiative is a terrific example of how the community can learn and embrace different ways of recycling and reusing. Simple lifestyle changes and a greater understanding of waste reduction can make a huge difference to the environment. I would encourage anyone to get involved with their local event.”
There are 14 events taking place across the seven boroughs in Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Islington, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest
throughout January and February 2017. Events last for three hours; you can donate your good quality items in the first two hours, and take other items for free in the final hour.
Find an event near you!
NLWA is also offering residents a free collection service for large or bulky items from your home prior to the events, such as large furniture and white goods. In order to do this please register your item by clicking on this link, by email to email@example.com or text 0779 409 0824.(Bulky items will be collected from your house one or two days prior to your borough’s event.)
Having a big clear out will not only free up space and create order in your home, but it should also make you feel better and more organised.
Here are some top tips to help you with have a successful de-clutter at home:
1. Give yourself enough time – whether this is a morning or a whole day – it may take longer than you think!
2. Make it enjoyable – try putting on your favourite tunes in the background, to keep you motivated and uplifted – you could even get some friends involved for extra help, or a second opinion.
3. Make sure you have enough boxes or bags – put things into piles and pack things into boxes or bags as you go along – one for recycling, one for selling and one for donating for reuse at a ‘Give and Take’ event of course!
4. If you’re re-organising your wardrobe take everything out – this may be a scary prospect, but the key is to take everything out and start afresh.
5. Be ruthless – If it’s a piece of clothing or household item, ask yourself whether you have worn it or used it in the past 12 months?
If the answer is no, then you are probably unlikely to again….
Please note that participants will be asked to register in order to enter the event, and provided with a numbered ticket, allowing them to enter the ‘taking’ part of the event in order. Events can be really popular so you might expect a queuing time in order to enter the event at the ‘taking’ time.
Please also parents with children under the age of 12 can bring them but they must remain under the parents’ supervision at all times.
The purpose of Give and Take days is to encourage as many people as possible to reuse the items they no longer need by giving them away, which in turn may help someone else. They also ensure that items which are still in a good condition are not thrown away needlessly.
Swish and Style
Tired of your t-shirts? Wish you had some different dresses? Save money by bringing along your unwanted (but wearable) clothes to our Swish and Style event and go home with a new-to-you outfit, all for free!
It’s simple. Have a clear out and bring good quality clothes to one of our seven events. For each item you bring, you get a token that you can exchange for another garment (maximum 10 items). Everything is free, everything is clean and everything will be re-worn and re-loved.
How it works
For the first hour, everyone is invited to drop off their clothes, shoes and accessories that they want to donate. Whilst we busily sort them into style and hang them on hangers, you’ll be free to check out the workshops – learning how to do simple fixes to your clothes and how to upcycle them into something completely different – a jumper becomes a hot water bottle cover, a treasured Babygro becomes a patchwork memory blanket and an old t-shirt becomes a bag.
During the final hour, you get to look through all the clothes and choose what you want. If you love it, take it. It’s first come, first served – but please only take items you’re sure you will wear.
What can you bring?
Please bring along:
- Clean and wearable clothes, shoes and accessories
- No damage, holes and stains
- You can bring women’s, men’s, children’s and baby clothes
- No underwear please, unless in sealed, unworn condition
Anything that we deem unacceptable will be given back to you and you will not be given a token. We have the right to turn away any item.
Please note only adults will be allowed at events. Parents with children under the age of 12 can bring them but they must remain under the parents’ supervision at all times.

What happens to the items left over at the end?
We will be running seven of these events across North London. Any items left over from one Swish and Style will be taken to the next. At the end of the last event, we will donate these items to the Salvation Army to sell in their charity shops. Any unwearable items that have somehow snuck in will be recycled and turned into things like car seat stuffing.
